The new national and European industrial policies are based on the circular economy and aim to achieve ambitious objectives of reducing waste and the environmental impact of economic activities. Indeed, European industry is the source of 20% of EU emissions and only 12% of materials used by industry come from recycling. Following the adoption of the Green Deal in 2020, the European Commission published a new industrial strategy that will support a green transformation, and which will prioritize the reduction and reuse of materials before their recycling. Priority efforts will focus on resource intensive sectors such as:  textiles, construction, electronics and plastics. However, Europe also needs a digital sector that revolves around sustainable development and green growth.

Cluster actions

The Polymeris cluster, in conjunction with its partners in the sector such as IPC and Polyvia, offers support and support actions to help French companies position themselves on the ecological transition and the circular economy. These actions are both targeted monitoring of calls for projects, advice on the preparation of European dossiers as well as opportunities for networking and exchange of experience. Companies can also benefit from a large network of cluster partners in France and Europe to be able to set up competitive consortia and offer innovative solutions.

Plastics recycling: action plan and actors' sheet

The development of plastics recycling is a common line of work for POLYMERIS and AXELERA. Launched at the end of 2021, the action plan, supported by the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region within the framework of the Voluntary Circular Economy agreement of the plastics industry for a period of one year, is broken down into several areas:

  • Promoting synergy between the networks by highlighting the members of the plastic recycling value chain (creation of player files and consolidation of a directory which will be put online on the clusters' websites)
  • A symposium will be organised on 16 June to enable players to identify themselves and meet each other,
  • To make the innovation dynamic visible in the region by identifying and consolidating innovative projects and initiatives
  • Encourage the emergence of structuring projects for the region involving players from the two clusters
  • To support the development of players' skills through the provision of quarterly strategic intelligence bulletins (available in the document bank in the MyPolymeris member area)
  • The organization of a conference in June 2022 to allow the actors to identify themselves and to meet

During this year, more than 50 actors from the entire plastic recycling value chain were identified within the networks of the two clusters. For each player, a meeting in the form of a physical or remote interview was proposed in order to fill in a synthetic player sheet. These stakeholder sheets made it possible to highlight the materials processed, technologies used and areas of expertise of each stakeholder.

A European congress on the circular economy for polymers

Since 2018, Polymeris has been organising the European Circular Economy Congress (Plastic Congress S3) every year. It brings together academic actors, industrialists, technical centres to address the topics of sustainable, smart and safe plastics processing.

The circular economy is one of the cluster's two strong thematic axes: the projects represent more than 50% of the cluster's portfolio. We note that they have strong growth potential over the period 2022-2025, in line with national and European issues and regulations. The circular economy is an inseparable chapter of current projects and the breeding ground for many current and future collaborative projects. The regulatory context, national issues and policies, users' needs and innovations in our neighbouring countries make this congress an event not to be missed.

Each year, Plastic Congress S3 brings together more than 60 participants from all over Europe. It is organised alternately: one year in France and one year in our European partners' countries in order to discover the skills offered by our network. In 2022, the 4th Plastic Congress S3 is organised in collaboration with Certech (in Belgium) and Materalia in a virtual format.

Focus on a flagship action to strengthen the ecosystem - DIS 30 project
  • Stake : Become by 2030 the European leader in sustainable, smart and safe plastic materials and products
  • Goals : Updating the synergies between regional structures to make the regional players in platurgy and composites innovation visible, optimising interactions between sectors of the plastics industry, consolidating the network for the benefit of structuring innovation projects and bringing together the region's technical centres and technological platforms
  • Drivers of the DIS 30 project: Polymeris and the IPC and CTCPA technical centers: the CTCPA as a national relay for the agro-food sector of Polymeris activities.
