A promising first step for the BIOntier project
BIOntier is an ambitious European project aimed at pushing back the boundaries of sustainable, circular, high-performance biocomposites. It is based on a strategic alliance bringing together partners to develop biosourced applications that are easy to produce, test and recycle. The project aims to accelerate the time-to-market for innovative solutions, helping to strengthen the European Union's position in the bioeconomy and sustainable technologies, while generating both industrial and societal benefits.
After six months of collaboration, the project partners met on April 1 and 2 in Bilbao, Spain, on the premises of BCMaterials, to take stock and plan the next phases of the project.
The two days provided an opportunity to advance the work around six concrete use cases illustrating the potential of biobased composites:
- Aeronautics: Access panel for supersonic aircraft, designed to withstand extreme thermal and mechanical demands.
- Hydrogen: Low-pressure tank for the safe storage of hydrogen, to support the development of the hydrogen economy.
- Water treatment: High-pressure tanks for reverse osmosis, designed to improve the durability and performance of purification systems.
- Automotive - Design: Semi-structural dashboard for the Jeep Renegade, combining aesthetics, lightness and functionality.
- Automotive - Safety: Structural shock absorber for the Fiat Egea Hatchback, designed to optimize safety in the event of a collision.
- Electric mobility: Battery housing (including covers and base plates) for various vehicles (Jeep Avenger, BMW E-scooter, LUCID), combining increased protection and weight reduction.
These demonstrators are still in the early stages of development, but initial results are promising. The BIOntier project is already a catalyst for innovation in more sustainable, high-performance materials.
We invite you to follow closely the next stages of this collaborative adventure, which offers high added value for European industry.
