CosmetoPack® II: A feedback day to enhance the safety of cosmetic packaging

A highlight of the project
The feedback day held on July 9, 2025 at Materi’Act marked a key milestone for the CosmetoPack® II project. More than 40 participants and nearly 60 experts from partner organizations gathered to share the project’s scientific advances, highlight collective contributions, and strengthen the collaborative dynamic. Concrete development prospects, particularly around simulation software and research on recycled plastics, were discussed in depth.

Towards safer cosmetics, from packaging to consumer
The CosmetoPack® II collaborative project, coordinated by Polymeris, aims to improve the safety of plastic packaging for cosmetic products. It brings together partners from across the industry value chain to develop reliable tools for assessing migration risks and propose concrete solutions to manufacturers.

A strategic challenge for the cosmetics industry
Faced with increasing health and safety and regulatory compliance requirements, cosmetic product packaging must be subject to greater scrutiny. CosmetoPack® II addresses this challenge by providing a structured, collaborative, and scientific approach to analyzing migration risks associated with plastic materials in contact with cosmetic formulations.

A shared methodology and tangible results
This structuring project has mobilized more than 27 partner organizations—companies, laboratories, technical centers, and universities—around the development of a testing protocol, a database, and a decision-making software tool.
The CosmetoPack® protocol, developed collectively, provides a guide to analytical testing based on rigorous assumptions, defined parameters, and a comprehensive summary of the results obtained. To date, more than 2,200 migration results have been produced and analyzed.

A digital tool for assessing migration
One of the project's major deliverables is the development of migration risk assessment software, designed in partnership with Ansys. This tool makes it possible to more quickly verify compliance with current regulations on restricted substances (endocrine disruptors, etc.) and anticipate risks, while optimizing packaging design and formulation.

Opportunities open to new players
Phase II of the project has been launched with two major priorities: scientific enrichment through monitoring research on recycled plastics, and the ramp-up of the simulation software. The project remains open to new partners wishing to access the data, test the tool, or contribute to the development of the protocol. CosmetoPack® II offers a unique opportunity to get involved in a collective effort to promote safer and more sustainable cosmetics.
